It’s coming along!  This week, the floor is finished, most of the lights are installed and the counter in the store is completed!  Next week is boarding room and hopefully kitchen cabinets!  We’re looking at a completion date of a couple of weeks and hopefully a grand opening by mid August (we have to move in and get the kitties settled).

Regina’s Journey to Her New Home!

Regina and her brothers and sisters came to us last summer.  They were all crazy, rambunctious kittiens that loved to play and didn’t take much time to be loved (except Rick, who was a ladies man).  Some time after Regina was adopted she was returned to us as Feline Leukemia positive.  We’re not sure how this happened, because all of our kittes are tested upon arrival.  Sometimes if they were exposed right before coming to us, it might not have shown up on the test.  Sometimes the tests can be wrong.  Or maybe she contracted the disease after adoption.  Whatever the case, after 3 more tests at the vet and a lab test, even though we still can’t believe it, it’s true.  Our Regina is positive.  And what makes it even harder to believe, is she’s not sick!  She has absolutely no illnesses and is full of energy!  At the time, we still had two of her siblings, so we retested them and thankfully, they were negative.  Feline Leukemia cats have a very short life span - most only live about 2 years with the disease and finding a home for such cats is almost impossible.  We hope to have a Feline Leukemia ward at our shelter one day, but currently we don’t have the room or the funds to do this.  We set out right away to find a new home for Regina.  We had several leads - but they were all out of state.  Finally a volunteer found a shelter in Austin that has an area for positive cats.  Unfortunately they were full, but sent out an email to all of their contacts to see if there was a place for Regina.  Finally one person volunteered to take Regina!  It’s a home that has 5 other Leukemia positive cats.  Regina is the youngest at just over a year old.  This woman has had great success with her foster kitties - a couple have had the disease for 5 years and are still going strong!  Last weekend, we took a road trip to Austin to deliver Regina to her new home.  We are very thankful for her new place and, as you can see in the pictures, Regina is too!!  Earlier this week we got an update - she is getting along well in her new home and her energy is rubbing off on some of her new friends!  We are so happy that Regina will live out her days in a home with her very own person to love her!
