A New Addition to Our Virtu-Adoption List

For those of you that aren’t familiar, our Virtu-Adoption list has several kitties listed that you can “virtually” adopt.  Each month you send us a donation of $15 or more via mail, paypal or automatic credit card draft and you get a letter from your virtually adopted cat, letting you know what’s going on at the shelter and how he/she is doing.  The kitties we choose for this list are less adoptable than most of our kitties due to temperment or medical needs.  Because we are a no-kill shelter, we never euthanize one kitty to make room for another - no matter how long that kitty has been with us - and if the kitty makes it on this list, chances are they will have a very long stay with us.  This program gives the shelter much needed monetary support for our long term residents and allows you to have a kitty when you otherwise might not have one - long work hours, allergies, other pets that aren’t cat friendly - whatever the reason!

Sunshine is the newest addition to our Virtu-Adoption list.  She was hit by a car when she was just a little baby and taken to Oso Creek Animal Hospital.  She spent several weeks recovering from her injuries there before she came to stay with us. Sunshine has been very shy since her accident, which causes her to hide when people come to our shelter.  Unfortunately, she also has a low tolerance for human attention and will often bite after just a few seconds of someone touching her.  Even though she’s a beautiful kitty, we fear her grumpiness will make her a long time resident of The Cattery.  This is especially sad because she is so young.

Please help us take care of Sunshine or another kitty on our list by signing up today!  Click here to virtually adopt Sunshine or one of the other kitties in the program!  Please email our shelter director, Samantha Person at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) to set up check or credit card drafts!

200 Adoptions!

The Cattery is proud to announce that we have reached 200 adoptions!!  We struggled to meet our goal of 100 adoptions in our first year of operation, and now, just 5 months into our second year, we have reach 200!  We are especially proud of this milestone after the economic problems we are all experiencing and location issues that we’ve had in the last 5 months.

Congratulations to everyone that helps us achieve our mission every day - to those of you that have adopted and given our kitties loving homes, to those in the media who have helped spread the word about our shelter, those that have donated air time, money, items and especially time.  Without everyone coming together, our dream would not have become a reality and would certainly not continue to be a success!

We thank you and the kitties thank you!

LAMAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STAFF DONATE OVER $1000 TO THE CATTERY
We recently received an email from a staff member at Lamar Elementary school in Kingsville, TX. She said that the staff there had been raising money for charity and that they picked The Cattery as one of the charities to benefit from their efforts. We, of course, were very thankful for their efforts, but were floored when we received the check in the mail! The staff at Lamar Elementary raised over $1000 just for The Cattery!! Some of the activities used to raise this money were bake sales, chicken and bbq plates, and raffles among other things. We are so thankful to everyone that participated in these fundraisers and that they thought enough of our shelter and the work we do to honor us and our kitties!

GRANT AWARDED FROM COASTAL BEND COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
The Cattery was awarded a $2500 grant for assistance in spaying and neutering our cats. Because of our change of location, we have been given 1/2 now and will receive the other 1/2 when we move to our new building. This money will obviously help us in helping more cats in our community!

Petsmart Adoption Hours

Until we find a new home for our shelter, we will be doing adoptions at Petsmart.  Saturday and Sunday we will be doing adoptions down the main aisle of the store close to the dog training ring from 11am-4pm. Monday - Wednesday we will be doing adoptions in the glass enclosure at the front of the store from 10:30am-4pm.

If you are interested in a specific cat from our website, please email us what kind of personality you are looking for in a cat and what kind of household you have (apartment, house, other pets, children, etc).  We can let you know if this cat would be a good fit for you, or suggest another cat.  You can fill out the application below and email it to us and we can schedule a day to bring that cat to Petsmart so you can meet him/her.  If that cat is right for you, we can continue the adoption process!

Volunteer Orientation Canceled

Volunteer Orientation will be canceled until further notice.  Once we move in to our new building we will post when volunteer orientations will be held.  Thanks!

Fine Wine and Felines Tonight!

Join us for our last Fine Wine and Felines at our current location Tuesday, January 6th from 5:30pm-7:30pm.

We’d like to thank HEB for generously sponsoring the food for tonight’s event!

The Cattery’s SPID location to close

I’m sorry to say that after all of our hard work in trying to make this location a success, the rent on this building and related expenses here makes it too expensive to continue.  This will be our last weekend (Jan 3rd and 4th) open to the public at this location.  We will still have Fine Wine and Felines on Tuesday, January 6th.  We are also planning our Meow Mixer for this year on 2/27 (more info to follow).
The volunteers and staff have all done a great job - all of our fundraisers have been profitable, the revenue for the boutique and boarding area increases each month, and adoptions increase each month, with over 30 in the month of December. Our two paid staff members (assistant director and a kennel person) even took a cut in hours and pay to try to make this work.
There are other less expensive places we could move, but the city has very strict rules on what zone we’re allowed to operate in.  We have some supporters that want to buy us a building, which would eliminate a huge financial strain, but we haven’t found anything yet in a location that we’re allowed to operate.  We are working with the city to either make a zoning change with a special use permit when we find a building (if it’s not in the correct zone) or amend the zoning ordinance to allow us in more areas, but both have proved to be time consuming.
In the mean time, a supporter has offered to let us house the kitties in a building on her farm outside of the city limits.  We don’t want to spend money renovating this building, so we will be doing adoptions at Petsmart only until we can find another home.  The kitties will still be cage free and will actually have more room to run around than they do now.
We need community support and donations now more than ever, because our two revenue streams will be cut off (boarding and boutique) until we find a new location.  Most likely there will be renovation costs associated with any place we move.
Because of the help of our volunteers and supporters, we have adopted over 150 cats into loving homes and have spayed and neutered over 200 cats.  We have all done a great service to our feline friends and to our city.  Sometimes we have to take a couple of steps back before we can move forward.  While we are sad to leave this location, we can do so much more without the burden of rent hanging over our heads each month and in the end I think this will be a blessing for our organization.
