The Cattery - Now Serving Dogs!
The Cattery is proud to announce that we are now partnering with Heartbeats Dog Rescue to add dogs to our Adoption Program!
We are continually expanding our operation and services to help more animals (and humans) in our community. We started off in 2007 as Corpus Christi’s first cage-free cat only shelter. We had 19 adoptions in our first 3 months. In 2008, our adoptions grew to 5 per week. By 2011 we were averaging 10 adoptions per week and were researching the best way to expand our services to make a big impact on our city’s pet overpopulation problem. Our solution was starting Corpus Christi’s first High Volume, Low Cost, MASH Spay/Neuter Clinic. Our clinic started by serving only cats (domestic and stray, socialized and feral) but soon added dogs to the surgery rosters and by the end of the year had performed 2500 surgeries that will not only reduce the pet overpopulation in our area, but will also lead to healthier, longer, and happier lives for those pets.
In 2013 we decided to raise the bar even further by adding dogs to our Adoption Program! In 2012, Haley Cyr who has been finding forever homes for wayward dogs and cats on her own (and was one of The Cattery’s first foster parents!) for over 10 years started her own foster based rescue called Heartbeats Dog Rescue. She worked closely with The Cattery’s Director to develop policies and procedures for an organized rescue. By the end of 2012, both organizations came to the conclusion that we would both be stronger and save more lives if we were a single organization.
We are proud to announce that Heartbeats has officially become part of The Cattery Cat Shelter. We couldn’t ask for a better, more well-rounded person to head up our expansion into the dog world! Haley has been a certified dog trainer for 6 years, has worked as a vet tech in an animal hospital, worked at the Animal Defense League of Texas, was an animal control officer and is currently a vet tech at The Cattery’s Spay/Neuter Clinic.
Heartbeats will continue to be a foster based program that strictly pulls dogs from high kill shelters across South Texas and places them into loving forever homes. The Cattery does not have facilities for dogs at the shelter, so all dog adoptions will be coordinated through Heartbeats. Very soon, Heartbeats will begin to have adoption events at Petsmart and Petco. You can follow Heartbeats on their Facebook page where you can view their adoptable dogs!
*As The Cattery does not have facilities to house dogs, there will be no intake of dogs at the shelter and feline intake remains on a “by appointment” basis.
